Whether its a collectible vintage costume necklace or a fine antique gold necklace, there are some things to know about the length. Necklace jewelry comes in many different lengths and each length has a name. Here they are from shortest to longest.
- Collar length - wraps snugly at the neck (12" - 13")
- Choker length - rest loosely against the neck (14" - 16");
- Princess length - ends just below the collar bone (17" - 19");
- Matinee length - rests just above or at the bust line (20" - 24")
- Rope/Lariat necklace length - few inches below navel (over 45").
Many shorter necklaces come with an extension chain so that you can vary the length according to the measurement of your neck. The best part about longer necklaces is that they can be worn full length or doubled to make a double stranded shorter necklace. It helps to know the names for the different style lengths in necklaces especially when you are not buying in person. So now you know your necklace length!
