Vintage Sherman Costume Jewelry History
1941 - 1981
Gustave Sherman is unparalleled as Canada's finest costume jewelry designer. He began his company in Montreal, Canada in 1941, producing high end, quality costume jewelry.
He used only first quality Swarovski stones, crystal beads and findings. Aurora borealis coatings, navettes and long marquise cut stones seemed to be a favorite of his.
Stones in Sherman Jewelry include both brilliant cut navettes and chatons. Baguettes were used, but not as commonly as other stone shapes. Heavy plating in gleaming rhodium, gold-tone or japanned settings were used. Swarovski did produce custom stones for Sherman, including some that were "reverse foiled".
In the 1970's the jewelry styles changed and shortly thereafter that the company ceased production. In recent years there has a been a re-birth of the appreciation for the superb design and craftmanship of Sherman jewelry. Sherman's fiery bracelets, brooches and parures are highly sought after by today's collectors.
